Options for Gigabit Analysis Using Observer
Observer can be used in two separate ways in gigabit environments. The solution you select will depend on your network's total throughput, and your budget. Option 1 is recommended for lower utilization gigabit environments, while Option 2 (Observer's wire-speed, full-duplex solution) is required for more demanding environments.
Option 1: Lower Speed Gigabit Environments |

|
If your gigabit environment's total aggregate utilization does not exceed 1000 Mbit/sec, you may use or install any Observer product (Observer, Expert Observer or Observer Suite), or standard software-based Advanced Single/Multi-/Expert Probes with any standard gigabit network adapter for gigabit analysis. In this environment, you install your Observer system or Probe on the SPAN (or mirror) port of a switch, and redirect the gigabit flow to the Observer console. |
Option 2: Wire-speed, Full-duplex Gigabit Analysis |

|
Network Instruments offers a number of options for full wire-speed, full-duplex gigabit analysis. This environment requires one of the following Network Instruments product(s):
- A 19" 4U Gigabit Probe Appliance (for local or remote use). The rack-mount probe integrates Network Instruments' own Gen2 Gigabit Capture Card with an industry-leading 4 GB memory buffer for ensuring complete and accurate captures on you full-duplex links.
- The GigaStor Probe Appliance is Network Instruments' Advance Multi-Probe designed for massive data collection and storage. This high-performance 19" 4U rack-mount probe can collect up to 8 TB of network data, capture-to-disk at 250 MBps, monitor up to four full-duplex units, and intergrates seamlessly with the entire Observer family.
- The Gigabit Observer Suite System which includes Network Instruments wire-speed, full-duplex dual receive gigabit adapter, and either an optical (for SX or LX) or copper TAP and all the required cables.
Gigabit Probes (#1 and #2 above) will report to any Expert Observer or Observer Suite console. |
